A set of steps engineers follow to solve a challenge is called an engineering process. It is highly iterative and some parts of the process could be repeated many times within one project. The steps that are iterated may be framed and articulated differently.
The first step is to conduct research. This includes identifying needs, finding information and analyzing constraints. It is a critical part of the engineering design process because it helps engineers discover the most effective solution for a given problem.
Once researchers have collected enough information they can begin to brainstorm solutions to the issue. This can be done a number of ways, and is where engineering creativity truly thrives. This is where ideas are analyzed and then analyzed. This could involve simulation studies, the creation of decision matrixes and even building prototypes for comparison.
This is the process of students selecting one of their best ideas and then putting together an idea for its development. Then, they construct the prototype using the specified materials and then test it against their performance criteria. Students may need to retest their prototype, and possibly revise it to ensure it functions as intended.
This is a great way to demonstrate the importance of problem-solving and iteration. Engineers are known to develop a solution to a problem, test the solution and then discover a new issue. The process continues until the engineer has a solution which meets their expectations.
